Musicon
The Musicon-site is the former industrial area of Unicon, which had been left unused for 10 years. With LYTT Architecture’s overall plan a new district has come into existence close to Roskilde’s centre with a lively urban environment, where the musical in the broadest sense forms an overarching theme. A mix of housing, business life, shops and culture and leisure activities creates new life in Musicon day and night.
The disposition of Musicon is based on the need for sustainable urban drainage systems, which by pure gravitation is directed to the deepest point in the area right where the previous gravel pit activities have left deep graves in the landscape. These are used both as percolation basins with great capacity and as a recreational facility with opportunity for many different activities. With the exposure of the rainwater in open trenches the water becomes an attraction, which is further enhanced by recirculating the water during the day.
The district is built around a high street – Rabalderstræde – where recycled rainwater becomes a physically useful element and an asset for the street. The street is laid out as an overall sloping multi-use surface, which at the deepest point is completed in an elegant staircase in white concrete, where rainwater is gathered and directed down to the basins. The street profile is dimensioned to handle heavy rainfalls during cloudbursts. New opportunities for stays and meeting places, climate adaption, innovative architectural solutions and a productive process: thanks to a successful corporation between public utility, municipality, advisors and the operators of the area we have succeeded in creating both economical advantages and recreational value.
“The combined facility is ultimately just 10 mio. more expensive than what a rainwater facility would have cost, a far lower amount than what the construction of a similar park for recreational use alone would have cost.” – Vand Plus Secretary, 2015
